A Cd. Guatemala court has ordered that former armed forces dictator Efrain Rios Montt be tried for genocide.
Rios Montt, 86...is charged in the murders of 1,771 indigena Mayans in Quiche province in 1982-83.
He is the first former leader to be charged with genocide by a Latin American court.
The court threw out 13 defense appeals.
Rios Montt only ruled the small nation for 17 months...but ordered a 'scorched earth' policy...that allowed the army to rape, torture and commit arson.
