PM Viktor Orban is regrouping after his close ally...embattled President Pal Schmitt, 69...finally resigned.
Orban is under extreme pressure from the EU and IMF.
His ruling party controls the legislature...which has 30 days to choose a new president.
Even after his Semmelweis University doctorate was stripped away...Schmitt stubbornly refused to resign from the largely ceremonial office he has held since 2010.
A university committee found Schmitt had copied large portions of his 1992 thesis.
Hungary's main political parties had called for his head.
Schmitt...claims he would write a new dissertation...but also says he may go to court to prove that he did not plagiarize texts.
