A nationwide cry for educational reforms got ugly and violent in Santiago and other cities...with more than 874 people arrested and 31 injured...after police used water cannons and tear gas to scatter protesters.
Most students want the federal government to take over the public school system.
It already educates 90% of the country's 3.5 million students...but only spends 4.4% of GDP on the system...well below a 7% UNESCO recommendation.
President Piñera has urged students to negotiate with the government.
It has offered a 21-point proposal...its second since the conflicts began.
