Using murder and intimidation on residents, narco gangs are fighting each other to control new drug-growing territories.
A recent attack on the small village of Tierras Coloradas is an example of people forced from their homes by the violence.
Tierras Coloradas lies in the "Golden Triangle", the center of marijuana and opium poppy growing.
"The situation is out of control," said the Durango prosecutor. "Organized crime has no limits any more. They don't respect women or children. It's a situation of total brutality."
