Members of the 12 nation Union of South American Nations, aka Unasur, agreed at an annual meeting to fight drug trafficking and to isolate governments that emerge from coups.
Unasur has been leaderless since the sudden death of Nestor Kirchner last month but Ecuador's President Rafeal Correa (pictured) acted as its temporary meeting head.
At this annual fourth meeting, Unasur adopted a charter that calls for sanctions on non-democratic regimes and is more substantial than the OAS's.
Hugo Chavez said that South American presidents will meet in December, to propose names for its new secretary general.
