MEXICO: U.S. Approving More Asylum Requests.
MIAMIHERALD/ U.S.immigration authorities are approving more asylum requests from Mexican citizens as drug violence escalates there. In 2008, 250 Mexican asylum petitions were approved compared to 153 the previous year and 133 in 2006. Though these numbers seem small compared to petitions from other countries, all Mexican petitions were were denied in the early 1990s. Most new asylum applicants are former police officers, lawyers and journalists.
