Punta Arenas...in the extreme south...is best known for extreme winds and cold.
But it has been inundated by rains...equal to 1/3 its annual total...forcing school closures... evacuation of 1,000 residents....and damage to over 700 homes.
Dozens of vehicles were swept away by torrents of water overflowing the banks of the Las Minas river...in the worst flooding in 22 years.
