Three times this week...President Felipe Calderon urged the biggest buyers of illegal drugs...including the USA...to consider "market alternatives" if they can’t find ways to reduce consumption.
“We are living in the same building. And our neighbor is the largest consumer of drugs in the world. And everybody wants to sell him drugs through our doors and our windows,” he said. “If the consumption of drugs cannot be limited, then decision-makers must seek more solutions — including market alternatives — in order to reduce the astronomical earnings of criminal organizations.”
The conservative Calderon...engaged in a bloody war with the narcos since 2006...has spoken out against legalization in Mexico...though now he says he is open to debate.
Narco gangs make some $30bn yearly selling drugs.
