Just days before the presidential election, nationalist Ollanta Humala and longtime Hugo Chavez defender slightly trails conservative Keiko Fujimori...because Peruvians basically distrust him.
Humala has even sworn on a bible about his commitment to democracy.
But a recent poll reports that 49% of the electorate believes Humala poses the greater risk of closing Congress and becoming a dictator...with only 21% for Fujimori.
"It's very difficult to believe that a person who for years and decades thought and acted against democracy and human rights is suddenly going to change," said a former interior minister. "His track record show he's no democrat."
AND: Indigena protestors blocking a key highway into Bolivia since 24 May in opposition to proposed mining operations in the Puno/Lake Titicaca region...will halt protests until after the 5 June presidential election.
