Some of Oaxaca's 70,000 teachers protested in Oaxaca city's main square in the start of an indefinite strike that affects 1.3 million students.
The teachers want uniform allowances for students, computers in all elementary schools and for the state to pay for school electricity.
In May 2006, 70,000 teachers (above) struck...setting off an often violent conflict...that began in June when former Gov. Ulises Ruiz used police force to break up a sit-in in Oaxaca city's main square.
That clash lasted nearly four hours, leaving dozens injured and arrested...and began a 6 month battle that saw at least 20 dead, including an American journalist and millions in economic losses.
