NYTIMES/ SIMON ROMERO/ A detailed account of hospital siege /
The actual result of the recent assault by hundreds of protesting federal police over salary changes was five dead: a policeman, two soldiers, a police officer escorting the president and a student who had showed up to support President Correa (pictured with gas mask)... with at least 38 people wounded. His personal armored Nissan SUV suffered bullet damage.
Now, comes the inevitable post-mortem: coup or an attempt by Correa to increase tensions by challenging police to kill him?
“At no time did Correa lose control of the government, nor did anyone attempt to succeed him,” said César Montúfar, a prominent opposition legislator.
“Some of the police were drunk, and many were armed,” said Correa aide Oscar Bonilla. “They prevented a helicopter from landing and quickly succeeded in blocking possible escape routes. We felt trapped inside the hospital and threatened by the men outside.”
