BBC/
It's the worst drought in the Amazon since records began in 1902. The Rio Negro is at its lowest level-- only 13.63 meters deep. Not only the Rio Negro, but the Amazon and Solimoes rivers are at their lowest level in decades.
Many river communities are stranded. Officials also fear many will be unable to vote in Sunday's presidential election.
The government has announced $13.5 million usd in emergency aid as more than 60,000 families have been affected.
The region's rainy season usually begins in November.
