BRASIL: Rio Debates Squatters And Slums After Tragic Landslides.
NYTIMES/ The recent rains that killed at least 251 have renewed the debate about squatters in high risk landslide areas. Rio state governor announced more than $570 million would be spent to build 10,000 new homes for those at risk from floods or mudslides. Meanwhile, Rio’s mayor announced some 4,000 families from eight slums would be moved immediately and given a monthly stipend.
