A human rights NGO reports that some 1,000 visitors in two jails near Caracas were being detained by inmates protesting slow and delayed trials.
"Around 1,000 visitors, some being held by force and other remaining voluntarily – so this is not entirely a case of kidnapping – remained after their overnight stay together with the 1,900 prisoners at Yare I and Yare II, who later allowed old people and women with babies to leave,” said the NGO spokesman.
Venezuela's prison suffered a tumultuous 2011...with many riots and 471 deaths.
Its 34 prisons hold 44,520 prisoners...but have a capacity for only 14,500.
