Even as the 33 miners in Copiapo emerged from their dark and isolated 69 days underground, some Chileans were reminded of an October 33 years earlier, when 16 miners there were summarily executed under orders of Gen Pinochet.
That squad, under Brig.Gen.Sergio Arellano Stark ( pictured), executed more than 70 men suspected of leftist activities in 1973.
“What was once a place of tragedy is now a place of hope,” said Mark Ensalaco, of the University of Dayton. “What a difference a democracy makes.”
