A couple of weeks ago, Dilma Rousseff was drafting along to the presidency on a booming economy and the huge popularity of President Lula da Silva...with a 20-point lead in most polls over opposition candidate Jose Serra. Now she is struggling with a lead of just four points -- a statistical tie. Other polls give her a lead of up to eight points.
Instead of discussing Lula's strong economic progress as she did in the first round, Dilma has had to explain past statements expressing doubt over her belief in God and favoring decriminalizing abortion.
And the sliming continues. A reporter yesterday asked her if she was a lesbian. Her sexuality has been speculated about online by blogger Josias de Souza of the Sao Paulo newspaper “Folha”. In response, an angry Dilma replied “Oh my dear, I will not answer that. I have a daughter and I am a grandmother, for God’s sake, I will not allow that level of discussion.”
