A conservative candidate in the 21 April presidential election...retired general Lino Cesar Oviedo, 69...died in a helicopter crash...during bad weather.
The pilot and a bodyguard also perished in the crash north of Asuncion.
Oviedo led a 1989 coup that overthrew longtime dictator Alfredo Stroessner.
Recent polls had him running in 4th or 5th place...with just 8% support.
3 days of national mourning were declared.
