On Rio's bay...Jardim Gramacho...the largest landfill in Latin America...has closed.
Since the late 1970's...it has received 8,000 tons of garbage daily...mostly from Rio...piling it 300 feet high.
The trash will now be trucked to a new treatment plant...described as the most advanced in Latin America.
Officials claim some 75 million cubic meters of methane gas will be recovered from the landfill in the next 15 years.
