Judge Carlos Castro Martins stopped all construction on the $11bn Belo Monte dam project on the Xingu river in the Amazon.
Castro Martins ruled in favor of a fisheries group and barred any work interfering with the flow of the river.
The Belo Monte dam is scheduled to provide 11,000-megawatts...making it the world's third biggest dam.
An appeal of the decision is expected.
