Lueck captures the real ambiance of home life in Cuba with fotos...where TV sets are usually the focal center of life...noting the overpowering importance of the nightly telenovelas.
So, so true.
My Cuban wife organized our social lives around these usually Brasilian-made soap operas...and pirated recent American movies.
Because, frankly, there isn't that much to do in Cuba...outside of La Habana.
When the Castro's finally allowed importation of foreign dvd players...with a 100% import tax, of course...we had our first real argument...after I arrived with a much sought-after Sony player purchased in Mexico.
She would watch rented telenovela dvds almost all night...every night...until I threatened to sell the Sony for muchos chavitos...hard cash...in the calle.
That calmed her down...and we finally settled on...a reasonable 2 hours nightly.
She watched...while I read Granma, the thin state newpaper...or sometimes... the dense, hard to obtain Bohemia magazine.
