Two opposition parties...long at odds with each other over control...have finally agreed to unite...to try win a majority of 450 seats in October's election...and limit the power of current President Victor Yanukovych.
For years...Yanukovych has cracked down on opponents, revised the constitution for his benefit, tried to curb the press and allowed corruption to flourish.
He has seen his popularity decline...as his economy has faltered.
The EU has stalled a free trade agreement...over his treatment of political prisoners.
