BRASIL: Absence Of Black Models During S. Paulo Fashion Week Feeds Protest.

GUARDIAN / T. Phillips

Some observers describe ultra-skinny runway fashion models as nothing more than...storks with boobs.

But others want to see better representation anyway.

So...São Paulo's annual fashion week is again marked by protests over the absence of black models there...with some calling for a 20% quota.

"We cannot accept the world of fashion insisting on being a stronghold for the Eurocentric," said organizer Frei Davi Santos.

"São Paulo fashion week sells the image of a Swiss Brazil where everyone is white and blue-eyed. The organizers...forget that more than half of Brazil's population is black."

A 2008 study found...1,128 models were booked for fashion week there...and just 28 were blacks.
