A Madrid judge ordered the arrest of 20 El Salvadoran military officers for the 1989 killing there of six Jesuit priests and two women.
The priests, a housekeeper and her daughter were shot dead by soldiers during El Salvador's civil war.
The case was filed using Spain's universal jurisdiction law.
It asserts that grave crimes can be tried anywhere, regardless of where the offences were committed.
