More powerful eruptions from the Tungurahua volcano that reawoke two weeks ago after months of relative quiet have forced the evacuations of hundreds from several villages as steady flows of hot gas and rock pour down the mountain.
Tungurahua, locally known as "The Throat of Fire," is 5,019 meters (16,456 feet) high and located some 180 kilometers south of Quito, began its current eruptions in 1999.
