AP/ Russian Yulianna Avdeeva, 25, is the first woman in 45 years to win Poland's Frederick Chopin Piano Competition.
The contestants spent three weeks playing works by Frederic Chopin in concerts in Warsaw.
"Chopin's music is so very special, I was enjoying every performance because I was not thinking about the competition, but was thinking about the music only," said Avdeeva.
Her selection has also sparked shock and criticism, with one critic calling it 'the biggest surprise in the history of this contest.' "I'm horrified at the decision of the jury," said Polish pianist Lidia Kozubek, adding that the Russian pianist shouldn't have made it into the finals.
