EUROZONE / GREECE: Austerity Protesters Now Challenge Parliament's Corruption And Lavish Perks.

NYTIMES / R. Donadio

Protesters in front of the parliament building are now questioning why those inside have virtual immunity from prosecution as well as lavish pay and perks while they try to pass new austerity measures.

“We’re here because we have lost confidence in the present political system, which has brought us to the edge,” said Christos Siveris. “This is our Thermopylae”.

Opposition lawmaker Kyriakos Mitsotakis proposal's for reducing Parliament from 300 to 200 members; eliminating double pensions, lucrative special payments for serving on committees and immunity for government ministers and lawmakers; and opening up the books on party finances...were not well received.

“We have a fundamental trust problem in Greece. We asked people to make huge sacrifices that we’re not willing to make,” he said. “There’s something wrong with that.”
