The Canadian mining concern Pacific Rim is suing El Salvador in the World Court for failing to give it the final permit needed to search for gold...and the subsequent loss of $77mn in potential profits.
El Salvador eventually denied the permit because of local environmental worries over water pollution.
“Past experience with mining companies has demonstrated to us that the country has been, in the past, not very careful in verifying that these projects were developed within acceptable parameters for the environment and our water resources,” said El Salvador’s attorney general.
This case is the first under the 2005 CAFTA agreement.
