Former vodka tycoon Janusz Palikot...whose liberal party has suddenly become Poland's third largest political force...wants a small wooden crucifix removed from the parliament chamber.
"We respect the religious character of the cross. That is why it should not be pulled into political disputes and should not hang in the parliament," said Palikot.
Palikot's new party supports abortion, gay rights and legalisation of marijuana...and seeks to reduce the role of the powerful Roman Catholic church in politics.
It just won 40 parliament seats...including with a new transsexual MP...and the first openly gay MP.
Newly re-elected PM Donald Tusk chastised Palikot for his proposal.
"It makes a mockery of their calls for a friendly country to start their debut in parliament with a war over the cross," Tusk said.
