Incumbent Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri won Sunday's election with an impressive 47.1%...but still not enough to escape a 31 July second round run-off.


President Cristina Fernandez's hand-picked candidate Sen. Daniel Filmus garnered only 27.8% against CFK's most dedicated opponent Mauricio Macri (right).


The conservative Macri is seeking a second term and President CFK has involved herself personally in the campaign to ensure his defeat.

    Three squatters died and 14 were injured during a violent clash when police tried to remove some of the 5,500 foreign families living in a camp in Indoamericano Park, located in a poor part of Buenos Aires.
    Argentina's fast growing economy and open-door migration policies have drawn more than 325,000 Paraguayans, 233,000 Bolivians and 50,000 Peruvians in recent years and more than 500,000 of the 10 million residents of Buenos Aires lack decent housing
    Allegedly, many of the squatters were promised homes by the government 10 year ago but were still waiting for a place to live.
    Rioters later attacked City Hall, calling Mayor Mauricio Macri responsible for the deaths.
    President Cristina Fernandez denied Macri's request for more police, accusing him of being unreasonable and xenophobic.
