BRASIL: Rio's New Police Chief Is...A Woman; 19 Goias Vigilante Squad Police Arrested.

   Rio's Civil Police Allan Turnowski (pictured) was abruptly replaced by veteran Martha Rocha.
    An official says a phone recording revealed Turnowski tipping off an inspector to a widespread investigation by the Federal Police into police corruption in Rio.
    Rocha, 51, is a 27-year veteran of the Civil Police and is the fifth Civil Police chief in the last five years.

 AND:   Nineteen police in Goias were arrested for belonging to a death squad which allegedly killed at least 40 people. Officials said group, active for 10 years, often staged shoot-outs to cover up executions.

BRASIL: Meirelles Decides To Remain Central Banker. Market Relieved.

BLOOMBERG/   Ending 9 months of speculation, Brasil's central bank chief since 2002, Henrique Meirelles declined a run for the Senate or Governor of his home state of Goias after heavy lobbying to stay by President Lula da Silva. "Meirelles’decision will be taken as a positive move because it removes uncertainty and brings stability back to the market,” observes economist Diego Donadio.

Brasil's Central Banker Considers Return To Politics.

Brasil's current central banker Henrique Meirelles is gathering support for a possible run for office in the state of Goias...as governor or in the national senate. Meirelles has also been mentioned as a possible running mate for President Lula's chosen successor, Dilma Rousseff.
Meirelles says he won't make a decision until March.

Brasilian Senator Admits We Are "A Bunch Of Crooks."

Brasilian senator Demóstenes Torres from Goiás state admitted before the senate: "We are but a bunch of crooks that have lost all credibility with our citizens."

He added that senators are a "gang of characters" getting themselves elected only to become rich.
