PERU: One Dead, 28 Injured In Water Clash Near Espinar.
ALERTNET/REUTERS/ Four hundred miles south of Lima near the town of Espinar, police fought with protesters over the Majes-Siguas II irrigation project, killing one bystander and injuring at least 28. The project plans a dam and water system capable of irrigating 95,000 acres (38,500 hectares) of agricultural land in the region of Arequipa.
"The province of Espinar has its own needs that have never been considered," said Nestor Cuti, a protest leader "With this concession were are condemned to have a lack of water for life," he said.
