BRASIL / VATICAN / ARGENTINA : Paulista Cardinal Scherer's Chance At Papacy...Goes Up In Smoke.

Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, 63...the archbishop of Sao Paulo...was touted as a top candidate in the papal election.
Many of 5 million Catholics in his archdiocese nervously watched the Vatican chimney...as white smoke was reported...after just 5 ballots.
They are disappointed that he was passed over...but elated that the conclave chose a  fellow South American...the cardinal from Argentina...Jorge Mario Bergoglio...as Pope Francis.
Some observers dismissed Scherer as a candidate of the 'status quo'...not the new broom needed to sweep away the child sex and corruption scandals that trouble the church.
A resident of his hometown of Toledo says of the Cardinal: 'He is very, very conservative and he never changes his mind.'
