Famous Argentine folk singer Facundo Cabral, 74, was ambushed in the early morning while going to the airport in Guatemala City.
Officials now speculate that a concert promoter in the same vehicle was the target of the well orchestrated attack.
Cabral's vehicle was hit by a number of rifle bullets and was accompanied by another carrying bodyguards.
He was scheduled to give a concert in Nicaragua.
Cabral is best known for the song "No Soy de Aqui ni Alla"/I'm Not From Here or There...sung in many languages.
