Brasil's ex-Vice-President Jose Alencar, who served two terms under President Luiz Lula da Silva, died in Sao Paulo after fighting abdominal cancer since 1997.
Alencar was born poor but became a textile multimillionaire.
Lula reportedly cried when he learned of Alencar's death, telling journalists that his 8 years of achievements would not have been possible without him. "Few human beings have the soul Alencar had, his kindness, his loyalty," said Silva.
President Dilma Rousseff has decreed a week of mourning.
