President Hugo Chavez praised private TV channel Televen for removing Colombian telenovela “Chepe Fortuna” because of content he described as “disrespectful to Venezuela.”
The popular telenovela featured a “arrogant, fat, rude” woman named Venezuela, who had a pet dog named Huguito/little Hugo.
A government agency last week urged Televen to end airing two programs, “Chepe Fortuna” and the dating program “12 Corazones” (12 Hearts), produced by Mexico’s Televisa.
In a recent "Chepe" episode, the female character Venezuela searches for her dog when it goes missing, calling out: "Little Hugo? Baby? Baby? Cutie?" Later crying on the telephone, she asks : "What will become of Venezuela without Little Hugo?" The phone voice replies: " Now, Venezuela will be free. Little Hugo has been pooping everywhere recently."
ALSO: Chavez's congressional opposition is wary about his recent call for "reconcilation."
"We have a president who spends 365 days a year lashing out at the media, the church, NGOs, fighting with everyone and then he tells us one day that he wants dialogue," said one lawmaker. Chavez has labelled them as "bandits" and repeatedly stated that reconciliation was impossible.
AND: Spain's anti-terrorist agency has identified 50 ETA members living in Venezuela, many working for the Chavez government. Iberian media claim that “the Basque separatist group ETA has chosen Venezuela to make a “tactical retreat, “ while France is being used to reorganize.”
The agency reports that 17 have been nationalized and all have residence permits.
