A new telenovela called Insensato Coração/ Foolish Heart debuted last week that features at least six gay characters.
What's the big deal?
Many cities there have large gay communities but homophobia and violence are still rampant.
Perhaps public perceptions will change. "Gay people have always been portrayed as marginal [characters] or in some negative way. It is important to show diversity and to raise political questions," said an activist.
Another claims that TV there has only presented a "distorted image" of the gay community, usually three types of programs: comedy, crime, and religious broadcasts where evangelical preachers rail against homosexuality.
