ARGENTINA: Former Founding Hero Now Recast As Genocidal Murderer And May Be Cast-off Banknotes.

GUARDIAN/ Rory Carroll/

Recent history accounts described Julio Argentino Roca as a hero who conquered Patagonia and formed modern Argentina.
His image adorns the 100 peso banknote, Argentina's largest, his name is on streets and statues honor him.
Perhaps not much longer as a campaign is underway to recast him as a genocidal murderer of the Mapuche indigena people.
Critics now label his 1878 "conquest of the desert" campaign as barbaric.
