BLOOMBERG/ The world's second-largest producer of soybeans is threatened by a disease which may cut yields by as much as 60 percent.
Called "soja louca" or mad soybean, it's been found in parts of Mato Grosso, which produces 30 percent of the nation’s output. It has also been reported in Maranhao, Para and Tocantins states.
It has the government worried. “This anomaly is not similar to anything that I have ever seen,” said Mauricio Meyer, a plant-disease specialist. “It is spreading slowly, but steadily.”
