U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield says the U.S. military will not approach Colombia's borders with Venezuela and Ecuador while fighting the production and trafficing of illicit drugs.

Both countries reject a new pact that allows the Americans to use Colombian military bases for counter narcotics operations.

Chavez said the proposed sharing of Colombian military bases “aggravate everything. The demon of war is appearing on the horizon. The United States wants to avoid any unifying process between us.”

“We’re talking about the empire, and the empire, once it is installed, does what’s in its best interest. Not even Uribe is going to have control over the actions undertaken by the troops of the empire, even of Colombian troops,” Chavez added.

Castro said that "the real goal (of the agreement between Colombia and the US to share military bases) is to control economic resources, to dominate the markets and to fight social changes."

Venezuela and Ecuador also reject the proposed agreement while Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Brazil dislike it but respect Colombia’s decision.
