Grandson Fights For Stalin's Reputation.

The grandson of Joseph Stalin has filed a libel suit against one of Russia's leading liberal newspapers, accusing it of lying in an article which stated Stalin had killed Soviet citizens.
Yevgeny Dzhugashvili, the dictator's grandson, is seeking £200,000 from Novaya Gazeta.

Poland's Kaczynski Expounds On Soviet War Crimes.

At a ceremony at Westerplatte on the Baltic coast, where the Germans fired the first shots against Poland on Sept. 1, 1939,President Lech Kaczynski compared the Soviet Union's murder of 20,000 Polish officers in the forest at Katyn and elsewhere to the Nazi genocide against the Jews.
"What's the comparison between the Holocaust and Katyn? There's one thing linking those crimes, though their scale was different. Jews perished because they were Jews. Polish officers perished because they were Polish officers," he said.
"It's not Poland that has to learn the lesson of humility. We have no reason for that. Others have -- those who caused this war," Kaczynski told war veterans and government officials.

Polish-Ukraine Relations Strained By WW2 Nationalist.

The current dust-up centers around Stepan Bandera, whom Ukrainian nationalists view as a hero of their independence movement and recently wanted to honor.
Poles see Bandera as a terrorist responsible for ethnic slaughter of as many as 100,000 Poles during the final years of the WW2.

Russia Defending 70 Year-Old Soviet/Nazi Pact.

Most of the world now condemns the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, signed 70 years ago, that allowed the Soviet Union to take over Poland and the Baltic states.
But Russia is now defending the 1939 treaty in an attempt to restore its sphere of influence.
"Molotov's grandson, Vyacheslav Nikonov, said his grandfather saw a deal with Nazi Germany as the only alternative after a failure to reach a military agreement with Britain and France."
