Just 4 months after major but still undisclosed abdominal surgery...along with 4 chemo treatments...President Hugo Chavez returned from another La Habana check-up...declaring himself free of cancer.
"I am free of illness," Chavez, 57, said while visiting a Catholic shrine.
Rumors about his ill health got a boost recently when Chavez's former personal physician claimed Hugo had less than 2 years to live.
"His assertion of being cancer free is overly optimistic at this point. No matter what kind of cancer he was treated for, it's just too early to tell," said a USA cancer expert.
Another analyst claimed : "This doesn't mean anything concrete. No one accurately declares themselves free of cancer after just a few months. This is political theater. His actual condition remains a state secret."
Chavez now joins 2 South American leaders who had cancer treatments and declared themselves cancer free just months after treatment.
Brasil's President Dilma Rousseff won a 2010 election after chemo treatments...and Paraguay's President Fernando Lugo claimed his lymphoma went into remission four months after diagnosis.
