Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 57, barely lost the 2006 presidential contest to Felipe Calderon.
But he screamed fraud and encouraged massive protests that shut down Mexico City for weeks...and left a bitter taste for many voters.
Now...that bad loser and seeming radical is trying to remake his image...as a moderate for next year's presidential election...vowing to fight monopolies and help small and medium-sized firms.
He has even courted Spanish banks.
Will it work?
"I don't think that people will give him another chance so easily," said political analyst Fernando Dworak.
