Tens of thousands Serbs angry over corruption and the poor economy took to the streets in Belgrade demanding early elections.
Opposition leader Tomislav Nikolic promised to go on a hunger strike until a new election was scheduled.
"This is my personal act, I am no longer taking any food or water," Nikolic told a crowd of thousands. "Serbia deserves sacrifice."
The next scheduled election is in 2012.
