PERU: U.S. Terrorist Berenson Freed...After Serving 15 Years.
REUTERS/ U.S. citizen Lori Berenson, 40, sentenced to a 20-year sentence for aiding the MRTA leftist guerrillas, has been granted parole but must stay in Peru after spending 15 years in prison. An anonymous military court jailed her for life, but pressured by the U.S. a civilian court retried her and sentenced her to 20 years. Berenson was arrested in 1995 on charges of being a leader of the MRTA, a small insurgency group was active in Peru in the 1980s and 1990s. She denied it.
