BBC/ The curator of the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo called the destruction of the entire collection in a fire a "loss to humanity." Almost 80,000 preserved snakes and thousands of spiders and scorpions used in research were destroyed. Some of the specimens in the 100-year-old collection were of rare or extinct species.
