After a Moscow newspaper charged that Alexander Bastrykin...the head of the Investigative Committee...Russia's version of the FBI...threatened to arrange the murder of a reporter...the official apologized.
Novaya Gazeta's editor had posted his claim online...that last week...reporter Sergei Sokolov was threatened by Bastrykin during a walk in the forest...because of unfavorable coverage.
Bastrykin is blaming his threats...on 'an emotional breakdown.'
Sokolov has since fled the country.
