LONG READ
It's been a while since a small sheen was discovered in the potentially vast Frade oil field off Rio's coast.
The November spill came from a deep sub-salt Chevron run well...and the USA energy giant...under the local direction of engineer George Buck...took steps to stop it...and clean it up.
But Rio state prosecutor Eduardo Santos de Oliveira (foto) later fined Chevron millions...and then proceeded to sue it...for $22 billion in damages...over the 2,400 bbls slick...and a smaller sheen in March.
Here's a long tick-tock account...with brief bio of Buck...the non-Portuguese speaking rep...and a recounting of Chevron's PR disaster in Brasil...where the big USA oil company found itself...in the wrong place...at the wrong time.
