Former US Governor Bill Richardson has changed his mind about remaining in La Habana until allowed to meet with jailed American Alan Gross, 62...convicted of espionage there.
He said he was rebuffed by officials...after he claimed that they invited him to the isla.
Gross was sentenced in March to 15 years in prison for violating Cuban "independence or territorial integrity."
At a press conference, Richardson said: "I have been here a week and tried through all means--with religious institutions, diplomats from other countries, all kinds of efforts--and I see that this isn't going to change. So why should I stay?
He says he is very disappointed and surprised officials even refused to discuss the case.
Previously he said: "I like the baseball season here in Cuba, so for me there's no problem in staying here".
He was staying at the luxe Hotel Nacional...not a rundown casa particular.
It was his second visit to Cuba seeking Gross' release.
His was not an official USA State Dept sanctioned visit...but reportedly had its blessing.
