Six weeks...100 million tons of ash and rock...with energy expended equal to 70 atomic bombs...have been spewed so far by Chile's Cordon Caulle volcano...and inflicted hundreds of millions of dollars of losses on nearby communities.
In Barriloche, Argentina...100 miles away from the volcano...the mayor said :"I can't say the winter season is lost, but it is going to be very difficult to overcome the situation because it has been catastrophic."
