CUBA/ECUADOR: Quito-- The New Popular Choice For Exiles.
GUARDIAN.UK/ A quiet exodus is underway in Cuba. Young people, especially professionals, are fleeing the island because of its severe economic problems. The national average for salaries is just $20 PER MONTH! So tens of thousands have left in just the past two years. Surprizingly, the preferred choice is now...Ecuador. "It's a sign that the revolution has failed, so they don't want to talk about it. We are losing our future," said professor Ricardo Martinelli. They pick Ecuador because only a letter of invitation is required rather than a visa. Last year arrivals rose by 147% to 27,114. Cubans marrying Ecuadoreans jumped from 88 in 2007 to 1,542 in the first nine months of 2009.
